Description
There are now 14 Trappist breweries in the world, with most in Belgium. Rather than dictated by style, these breweries have to be based within Trappist Abbeys (Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance) and manned by live-in-monks. All beer is produced for the benefit of the Abbey, reinvested in its upkeep and activities. Although many of the Abbeys are ancient, and brewing a key component in monastic life for over a thousand years, all Trappist breweries are less than 200 years old, with many only starting to produce beer in the last decade or two. While Trappists are the most famous Abbey beers, there are others brewed in Abbeys that are worthy of attention, such as St Bernardus.
